So it begins...

So here it is, my wonderful blog about anything I want, which will inevitably turn into my rants about current events and politics. And if you are reading this you are either extremely bored, or actually think I make sense. In either case I pity you. So I had to do a blog for Comm-tech and education and to be honest didn't like it. But I liked posting my views so here I am. Darn school teaches you things hey.

So we will start local. Not local lethbridge, but local Calgary. Jeremy Zhao is my hero of the month. If you don't know about him, check out his website http://www.jeremyzhao.com/. He is a U of C Student running for mayor of Calgary! His site not only includes his platform (which he describes as dynamic - brilliant) but also links to his competition, again a great move. While he has his platform on how he would run the City of Calgary, like taking the bus to work everyday, his underlying intent in running for mayor is voter apathy. For my friends with small background in Social studies, voter apathy is those who can vote finding excuses NOT to vote, such as "its just one vote, it doesn't mean anything." This is a huge issue.

Think of it this way, recently certain political factions have popped up here in lethbridge, and obviously exist in Calgary and edmonton (among other places) that essentially stand for racism, racial superiority and segregation. If only 19% of voters turn out, only 10% of support is needed to gain power with those sort of beliefs. So if, say, 10 000 people are eligible, 2 000 people actually show up to vote and only 1 001 people are needed to vote for a specific person to be in power. Thats 8 000 people literally turning over and saying I don't care.

Thats what's really frustrating. People don't think voting matters, until its too late or too early to do so. So many people complain about city construction, lack of focus in the city, provincial or federal governments but when asked if they actually go out and vote, its overwhelmingly NO. So what gives them the right to complain?

So I urge you, wherever you are, GO VOTE. Do 10 mins of looking at candidates and seeing which one suites you and GO VOTE for them.

My problem is with "younger" people who say it doesn't affect them. City gov't's and provincial gov't's affect us the most. City council plans affordable housing and zoning where we must live, they decide where parks and other things are placed. The province...well they decide if we can even attend University, College or other post secondary institutions.

For pete's sake (I still don't know who pete is...) GO vote...get others to vote, its important, because if you don't, who knows who will run your city, province or country?

Dear Andrew,

I'm glad I'm your hero of the month. Probably too big of an honour! I am now a case studies for schools around Calgary as well. I hope you come out and vote when you can, and I hope you keep informed and stay critical. Calgary or any city will be ours to inherit, but if it's not in the right hands initially, then we're going to suffer. So go spread the word about Jeremy Zhao, for he could be good, but Calgarians are better.
